Ski Holidays in Flims

Ski holidays Flims - view of resort

Ski holidays in Flims should be more popular with the UK market. You may not even have heard of Flims but it's actually one of Switzerland's best kept secrets and deserves more notoriety with British skiers. Quiet, snow-sure and largely untouched by the masses, the resort of Flims has retained much of its Swiss alpine charm, and therein lies its beauty.

The vast majority of skiers in Flims are Swiss weekenders enjoying their own holiday homes but although there are plenty of privately owned chalets in Flims the typical chalet holiday is not on offer here. However, what Flims does have is a fine selection of hotels, ranging from the luxury to the much more affordable.

Whilst the resort itself is fairly small, Flims is part of the very large Flims-Laax-Falera ski area. With 220km of slopes, there is more than enough to satisfy even the best skiers for a week. The ski area is best suited to intermediate skiers and boarders with a huge selection of long, wide and relatively gentle pistes, and there are plenty of options for beginners too. Whilst there only a few steep challenging pistes, there are a number of off-piste itinerary runs which add to the diversity for experts.

Getting to Flims

Zurich is the closest gateway airport to Flims (and the other resorts in the interlinked ski area) and is around 1 hour 45 minutes' drive away. Some of the hotels in Flims offer a transfer service from the airport but the other option is to rent a car as all of the hotels offer guest parking. The drive itself is very easy, and due to the height of resort doesn’t involve any travel-sickness-inducing, windy mountain roads!

What is great about Switzerland is the fast and super-efficient train service which offers a comprehensive network of routes around the country. As such, it is very easy to get a train from Zurich Airport to Chur (the main valley town to Flims). From here there is a connecting post bus service to the resort of Flims which takes 30 minutes into resort.

Great food, great skiing, great hotels

One of the main draws of Flims for British skiers is simply how quiet the slopes are. Whilst the weekends draw visitors from Zurich, the large ski area coupled up with the fast and well placed lifts mean there are very few lift queues, and virtually none at all during the mid-week period.

For those who enjoy a long mountain lunch, Flims has an impressive selection of gourmet restaurants. Have you ever been served an incredibly tasty steak in a tepee whilst at 1,800m? Fancy eating penne pasta cooked in a huge cheese wheel whilst taking in the view of the Graubunden region? Restaurants La Vacca and Das Elephant do just that.

Ski holidays in Flims are made easier by the array of hotels on offer, catering for every budget. This means that holidaymakers have a much better choice of travel itineraries. The hotels in Flims are quite flexible, with no set Saturday changeover day. With a short transfer time Flims is therefore the perfect ski resort for a long weekend ski holiday.

Family ski holidays in Flims

Most of the major hotels in Flims offer a dedicated resort shuttle service to take guests to and from the main lift station. There is also a free bus service that runs between Flims and the neighbouring resorts of Laax and Falera. Flims is a great place for families with younger children – the ski area is perfect for beginners and will help young skiers build confidence very quickly. The Flims-Laax-Falera ski school has excellent instructors with many that are British or speak English as their first language.

Late season ski holidays in Flims

The Flims-Laax-Falera ski area sits in a large high altitude 'bowl' with a lot of the slopes being south facing. During January and February skiing in Flims is a sun-soaked and glorious experience when the sun is out. Although towards the end of the season the lower runs can get slushy there is plenty of very high and snow-sure ski terrain with the majority of the slopes being well over 2,000m in altitude and even the Vorab Glacier at over 3,000m. Flims offers, therefore, a ski season that starts early and finishes late - it is one of the most snow-sure resorts in Switzerland and makes a great choice for a late season ski holiday in April.
