Val d'Isere chalets - with or without flights

Approximately 15% of the chalet properties we feature in Val d'Isere come packaged with flights from the UK along with return resort transfers. There are several advantages of booking a 'package' ski holiday with a respected tour operator:

1. As your flight seats have been pre-purchased in bulk (on a chartered flight) the unit per person price is much lower than a scheduled airline fare. Much of the cost saving is passed on in a lower priced holiday.
2. As you will be sharing your resort transfers with other passengers (usually in a 50+ seater coach) again the unit price is lower and passed on to the consumer.
3. As you are puchasing a package holiday you are entitled to consumer rights under the 'Package Travel Regulations'.
4. As your package holiday includes return flights (originating from the UK) you are also fully financially protected under the ATOL protection scheme.

However, there are also disadvantages of booking a package holiday:

1. The flights can be at rather anti social hours with early airport departure times.
2. The flights are usually only provided from the main UK airports of London Gatwick and Manchester. If you want to fly from a regional airport you will need to buy in your own flights and transfers with only a minimal discount from the tour operator for not using the flights they offer.
3. Not everyone enjoys a shared coach transfer which may stop to let other passengers alight before you do.

The remaining 85% of chalet properties we sell in Val d'Isere come without travel. Over the years we have built strong relationships with the best and most reliable taxi services operating in the Alps. Therefore, we can book return taxi transfers for you to meet your flights. These come in a variety of vehicle sizes from luxury sedans to 56-seater coaches. However, the most common size of taxi vehicle in the Alps are the 7 or 8 seater minivans produced by either VW or Mercedes.

After we have helped you arrange the basics of your holiday (accommodation and travel) then it is time to look at ski schools, your lift passes and ski equipment hire.

  • Ski schools. We have plenty of recommendations and booking online is easy.
  • Ski equipment hire. We offer plenty of options plus our own good value equipment through Skiset.
  • Lift passes. These can either be arranged by your accommodation provider or simply booked online for collection in resort. Again, we can offer guidance for the most convenient option.

The residential areas of Val d'Isere

There are several distinct residential areas to Val d'Isere that you should be aware of. Coming up the valley and entering the resort you first reach La Daille which is partly made up of large, ugly apartment blocks but also a small hamlet of traditional chalet buildings which are set back on the left-hand side. The slopes returning from the main ski area down to La Daille make for the easiest route back to resort level, so although the centre of resort is 2km away staying here is very ski convenient. The lifts from La Daille also offer a very practical way to get skiing in the morning, with both the Funival funicular (built 1987) and the new high-speed gondola which accesses the Folie Douce après ski bar and restaurant area.

As you enter the main resort of Val d'Isere there is the Le Cret area on the left hand side which is where several high-end chalets are located. On the right is the entrance to the 'backroad' which branches off the main drag through the resort centre, the Avenue Olympique. At the lower end of the 'backroad' is the Petit Alaska residential area which has seen a lot of development in the 2020's. There are many fine chalet properties here but being at the bottom of the steep east facing slope of the Bellevarde Mountain less direct daylight gets to these chalets, especially in the deep winter months of December and January.

Passing through the tunnel under the pistes gets you to the areas of Le Joseray and Le Chatelard. These are quiet residential areas but chalets here have fantastic views of the famous Face de Bellevarde, as well as relatively easy access to the slopes leading down to the snow front of Val d'Isere with the main lifts and ski school meeting points.

2.50km Beyond Val d'Isere centre lies the traditional village of Le Fornet with its iconic cable car accessing to the glacier skiing above. The old village of Le Fornet (which dates back to the 1750's) is accessed by crossing the old bridge across to the other side of the Isere River and this is a charming hotch-potch of older chalet and farm buildings which are now converted into smart and desirable rental properties.
