Lech was originally an old farming village and it was not until the road between Lech and Stuben was improved in the late 19th Century that it ceased to be cut off completely during winter months from the outside world. Although summer tourists have been visiting Lech since the mid 18th Century it was not until after WWII that winter tourism began to grow. However, unlike the French resorts which were growing at much the same time Lech never developed as a purpose built ski resort and in many ways retains its farming community atmosphere. Due to its traditional layout and far from purpose built nature ski in ski out hotels in Lech are harder to come by than in many other resorts. So although there are many superb hotels in this Arlberg classic, only a small number in the main part of the resort have been built in a true piste-side location.

Ski in ski out hotels in Lech - Oberlech

Lech is actually split up in to two distinct areas. The first is the main village centre of Lech where most of the accommodation, shops and bars are located. However, Oberlech (which translates to Upper Lech) is a cluster of largely ski in ski out hotels and privately owned chalets which sits on a sunny and gently sloping area some 250 metres above the main village centre. There are few roads in Oberlech which open during the winter so there is instead an underground pedestrian tunnel system connecting each of the hotels and chalets to the top of the cable car which ascends from Lech. The 4 star Hotel Burg is a fine example of one of the ski in ski out hotels of Oberlech. In fact you simply cannot get more ski in ski out than this lovely, family-run 4 star hotel as it is literally located in the middle of the piste. This hotel is well known for its classic Austrian charm and also its modern spa facilities which include a sauna, steam room, herbal steam spring, Kneipp water therapy bath and solarium.

Ski in ski out hotels in the main resort of Lech

The 5 star Hotel Arlberg, situated in the main resort of Lech, is still considered by many as the best hotel in the resort and also offers a ski in ski out location. The Schneider family have been providing first class luxury service and facilities here for over 50 years and a stay at the Arlberg is always something rather special. Being located at the foot of the home slopes which lead back into Lech from Oberlech means guests can ski right back to the hotel's door at the end of the day. As with most of the top ski in ski out hotels in Lech, there is a special spa at the Hotel Arlberg with facilities such as the outdoor whirlpool, indoor swimming pool, Finnish sauna, bio sauna, infrared cabin, steam room, solarium and ‘senses’ suite.

Another (almost) ski in ski out hotel in Lech that is a little different is the Romantik Hotel Krone. This hotel (first established in 1741) still has a traditional feel to it but has been modernised over recent years to include an excellent indoor swimming pool, spa facilities and a trendy outside ice-bar which is popular in the afternoons as one of the resort’s premier apres ski venues. Although you could never say that Lech is a party resort this apres ski bar is fairly lively until 6pm on most days.

The 4 star Hotel Monzabon, also owned and managed by one of the many branches of the ubiquitous Schneider family, is one of the best value ski in ski out hotels in Lech and provides fantastic service from friendly staff without the heavy price tag of other luxury properties in the resort. The Hotel Monzabon benefits from having some very good spa facilities (completed in 2009) which includes an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, solarium and some ‘experience’ showers. Furthermore the hotel has its own indoor ice skating rink with curling lane – not something you find every day in a hotel! Apart from the great facilities and being able to ski in and out of the hotel’s boot room guests staying here will also enjoy the proximity of the resort centre which is no more than 50 metres from the hotel’s front door. The world famous Strolz shop is literally opposite the hotel, on the other side of the River Lech!
