Thomily is quite unique. How many chalets have their front door at the top, their bedrooms below their sitting room, and a dining room you can ski to - into, if you haven't yet mastered stopping? The top-floor sitting room is roomy and high, with huge windows and a wraparound balcony giving wraparound views of Bellevarde and the Charvet. When the sun goes down, there are DVDs and Wi-Fi. On the next level down are the five excellent bedrooms, with their rather opulent marble bathrooms. Three bedrooms have balconies with the views, while two offer extra beds for half-price children or relatives, subject to flight seats. The lowest floor is where the amazing dining room is. If you are the keen sort who's on the first and last lifts, you'll miss the slightly surreal experience of waving your toast at skiers just a few feet away. By the end of the week, you'll probably decide that starting later is more civilised. Next to the dining room are the kitchen, where one of our top chefs will be getting hot and stressed, and a sauna for you to get hot and de-stressed. If you're coming to Val d'Isere for the nightlife, art galleries or church, we do have chalets in more convenient locations. The main village is twelve minutes' walk across the nursery slopes or fifteen by road, though there's a free and frequent bus service for anyone too skied-out to walk. But if you're coming for the skiing, look no further: Thomily is very well situated. You can set off from the dining room, though it's easier to collect your skis and boots from the ski locker and boot warmer on the top floor and walk the hundred metres or so to the 'M'. From there you zoom down to the village centre, nursery slopes and main lifts. At the end of the day, most guests ski back across the M from the Rogoney chair. It is the last lift to close. Guests at Thomily certainly get their money's worth from their lift pass. Chalets des Neiges, des Pentes and des Pistes are the three parts of a purpose built chalet development. The Funival and the La Daille bubble pass close by, while the Les Etroits chairlift goes practically overhead. The building is on a little unskied island, overlooking the bottom of the OK, Orange, Diebold, Raye and Verte runs. Being right on the pistes is great. Getting to the slopes is no longer a chore, and queueing for buses a thing of the past. To shed a layer of clothing, you just dump it as you pass. And these aren't just any pistes: they are World Cup Downhill pistes. Most people have their first run of the day on these runs, and some seldom leave them. They offer skiing for every standard, ultra-quick lifts back up and guaranteed snow from snow cannons top to bottom. And once the lifts close, they become lethal with tearaway toddlers on toboggans! In the morning, you walk for a few seconds before stepping into your bindings to glide to the lift of your choice - probably the Funival, still the world's fastest lift. At the end of the day, good skiers ski right back to the door and beginners stop where they started, thirty seconds' walk away. The only people who find the 20-minute walk from the main village less than ideal are those who spend more time in Dick's than on the slopes, but the free bus runs until 2am, and the teenage sample we asked were enthusiastic: apparently, staying in La Daille gives time for a mint or two on the way home, while being right on the pistes means even with a record hangover one can still be on the first lift. Parents will be reassured to hear that. The chalet is very comfortable and well appointed. The bedrooms are not huge - predictably, since the real estate they occupy must be some of the most desirable in the world - but they are tastefully decorated, and have underfloor heating, reasonable cupboards, safes, good lighting and gorgeous bathrooms. Even the beds are bigger and firmer than usual in France. Each bedroom has a private ski locker in the ski room, with very effective individual boot dryers. Chalet des Pentes has five bedrooms with five en-suite bathrooms. Its sizeable sitting-dining room has a log fire, wide-screen TV, DVDs and Wi-Fi, and bottomless bespoke sofas. The chalet can take eleven guests, because Room 1 has both a double bed and a single. If one party fills the chalet, a third person can stay in this room half-price - perfect for Mormons, Muslims and bigamists. Mostly it's just used by a couple with a child. This is a beautiful chalet that is situated on the edge of the piste at the foot of the Solaise making it virtually possible to ski from and to the front door. The centre of Val d'Isere is a 15 minute walk away although there is a public bus that stops nearby every 15 mins during the day (please note this bus service stops at 8pm). Built in typical Savoyard style it combines modern comfort with a traditional chalet atmosphere. There is a lovely galleried sitting room with huge beams and an impressive log fireplace complete with hunting trophy above. There is a sauna on the lower ground floor with a separate shower. Note 1 from Alpine Answers: For split chalet bookings whereby different parties share the chalet the tour operator running this chalet has a policy that allows children of any age to share the chalet with other guests for any week. We advise checking prior to booking the ages of other guests already booked into the chalet. However, we cannot guarantee that a party with young children will not book after you. Note 2 from Alpine Answers: The chalet staff are not qualified chefs but keen cooks with suitable experience, they work to a set chalet menu for the week and provide a vegetarian alternative for vegetarians or for guests that don't eat a particular evening's meat or fish dish. They obviously aim to please but at the same time they would expect a degree of compromise from any guests with specific dietary needs and requests whether by choice or for medical reasons (including for example, but not limited to - gluten free, dairy free or vegan). These guests should be happy to simply make the best of the chalet menu on offer and accept that the chalet staff will not be able to offer a completely alternative menu to suit their dietary requests. The chalet staff can get in touch the week before your arrival to discuss the menu and advise of things that you should bring. The Bellevarde Lodges are an imposing collection of six stone-and-timber chalets situated right on the Santons piste and just a few hundred metres from the Olympique cable car. The Lodges have proved extremely popular with guests and the national press. Described by the Evening Standard (2006) as 'comfortably chic, the best located new chalets in resort this season'. Named after wines (plus a brandy!) Muscat, Merlot, Margaux, Cognac, Savoie, Chablis - each chalet is identical in layout and varies only in orientation and colour scheme. Genuine old timbers from a local dismantled farmhouse, Italian marble in the bathrooms and polished parquet flooring have been used throughout. The vaulted sitting rooms with exposed beams and floor to ceiling glass boast finest English made sofas and one of the most breathtaking views in the resort. There is a delightful fireplace, a huge sunny terrace and widescreen DVD television with cinema surround sound. New for the 2006/7 season were hot tubs on the chalet sun decks with magnificent views of the Bellevard Mountain. Hair dryers in every room and heated ski boots in the morning are some of the small but important touches. Thanks to its piste-side position the Bellevarde Lodges are genuinely ski in/ski out. Chalets Juniper, Jasmine and Jacaranda are spread across the top two floors of the delightfully retro three-star Residence Le Grizny, with Juniper occupying the whole upper floor. The building is unusually spacious and solid, having been built before Val d'Isere's narrow valley started running out of space. And its position is really good: the village centre is four minutes' walk away, the ski buses stop nearby, and it is possible to ski home. Although the front door is conveniently close to the main road, the bedrooms are further along the building, towards the silent forest on the slopes of Solaise. Nearly all of them have deep east-facing balconies with impressive views of mountains, trees and snow, and noise is never a problem, unless it's you making it! Juniper has nine bedrooms, ranging from cosy to very large, six bathrooms and separate, sizeable sitting and dining rooms. Two of the cosier rooms are discounted (rooms 14a & b), while the smallest of all, 14c, has a very special deal: its double bed is sold as a single bed, but if you can inveigle someone into sharing it, they pay half price. Juniper's atmosphere is always fun. It tends to appeal to relaxed people, perhaps because from the outside the building looks a bit like a municipal library, or because with six bathrooms for up to eighteen people it doesn't attract the sort of guests who spend from tea-time to dinner-time trying to make themselves beautiful. Or maybe anyone uptight is put off by those technicolour baths and basins. But however convivial the dining and sitting rooms become, guests can escape into the quiet of their own rooms, most of which are a good size. There is no TV (imagine trying to get 17 or 18 people to agree on what to watch?), but there is Wi-Fi.
