Established in the 19th century by ranchers, Steamboat Springs acquired its name from the noise that the local thermal springs made as they blew. Today Steamboat is a true "cowboy" town and very charming too, with the modern and convenient slope side resort just three miles away from Main Street's restaurants, pubs and shops. The skiing is very good for families and intermediates as there is excellent daily piste grooming, and the more accomplished skiers and boarders will love the trees, off-piste terrain and "Champagne Powder" for which Steamboat is famous. Steamboat boasts some of the best accommodation in Colorado having invested heavily in new hotel and condo developments.

Pros
- An excellent family resort with lots of easy runs
- Fantastic gladed skiing suitable for all standards including expert
- Great snow record and often has wonderful, deep and light powder snow
- Plenty of the accommodation at the mountain base is ski-in and ski-out
- The old town has a traditional "Wild West" flavour
Cons
- The old town is a drive from the slopes
- The modern mountain base village is sprawling and not that attractive
- The ski area is not big enough to amuse adventurous intermediates for a week
- There is not a great deal of double black territory although what there is, is superb
Resort Restaurants
Steamboat has quite a few restaurants to dine in and a few of them will give you the chance to try some local dishes such as buffalo, rocky mountain trout and elk. In downtown Steamboat the Old West Steakhouse and the Cottonwood Grill offer a lovely menu. It is also possible to eat in a few of the mountain restaurants in the evening including the Western BBQ, Ragner's and Hazies.
Mountain Restaurants
There are a few self-service restaurants, a coffee bar and a cafeteria and a Western style buffet. There are also a couple of fine dining restaurants that offer a little more than the usual fast food, which is often found. Thunderhead is at the top of the Steamboat gondola and often has a BBQ on the sundeck, for a quick snack Four Points Hut can offer you chilli, soup and hot dogs this restaurant is located on Storm Peak.
Apres Ski
At the base of the ski area The Bear River Bar and Grill is always a lively place to visit after your day on the slopes. There is usually live entertainment with music and comedians, and when the sun is shining, the sun deck is a great place to sit and watch skiers and boarders ski back down to the bottom of the runs. A couple of other places are the Tugboat and the Slopeside Grill.
Nightlife
There are about 20 fun and lively bars to visit in Steamboat, and a lot of them have a local Western feel. The Old Town Pub often has live music, as does the Tugboat. For late night dancing, take a visit to Levelz, which is one of the nightclubs. It is also possible to get up to date nighttime entertainment information once in Steamboat with its 'Nightlife Trail Map'.
