Chalets Obergurgl, hotels Obergurgl, ski holidays Obergurgl

Obergurgl is situated in the spectacular Oetz Valley and is Austria's highest parish, resulting in excellent snow records and a very long skiing season. The resort remains largely unspoilt and has no through traffic - there is a wide selection of very good hotels. The skiing starts directly from the village and most hotels offer ski in / out locations. Obergurgl is a small village so getting about is really very easy and arranging a lunchtime rendezvous of skiers and non-skiers is a pretty simple exercise which makes it a popular choice for families. The apres ski is varied and is mostly centred around the hotel bars and the resort enjoys a friendly atmosphere that draws guests back year after year. The large beginners' area is a great place to learn and quickly builds confidence. It also has the advantage of being very accessible taking out a lot of hassle for those just starting out. The hotels in Obergurgl are generally very good and the resort is a good spot for families with beginners. The neighbouring resort of Hochgurgl also has some hotel accommodation but is a smaller resort than Obergurgl.

Resort Restaurants

The resort restaurants are mainly restricted to the hotels with a few exceptions such as the traditional Krumpn's Stadl. Both the Nederhutte or David's are open in the evenings accessed by snowmobiles, Nederhutte has a fondue evening with live music. Of the hotel restaurants the Romantika at the Madeleine and the Belmonte are popular pizzerias. The Hexenkuchl at the Jenewein gets great reports for traditional Austrian food, but is quite expensive. The Hotel Alpina, Hochfirst and Gotthard-Zeit all get good reports. The Edelweiss and Gurgl and the Josl have fantastic reputations.

Mountain Restaurants

Mountain restaurants are a bit limited in Obergurgl but there are a few. Nederhutte at Gaisberg has a good choice of menu and a friendly atmosphere. David's Skihutte is good value and again a friendly, cheerful place to visit. For local cuisine the Hohe Mut is a small restaurant and has fantastic views. There are a couple of other options in Hochgurgl - The Wurmkogelhutte is a fairly large, pleasant self-service restaurant serving fine Austrian fare. There is also a tiny hut above at Wurmkoglgipfel that serves limited food. Many people return to the village for lunch.

Apres Ski

Again the Nederhutte is a popular, lively apres ski destination where you can either ski or take a snowmobile back down. The sun terrace at the Wiesental is popular in good weather as is the Hexenkuchl at the Hotel Jenewein. The Umbrella Bar outside the Edelweiss hotel is another popular apres-ski bar in good weather and the bars at the base of the Rosskar and Gaisberg lifts are good stop off points on the way back from skiing.

Nightlife

In general the apres ski scene is busier than later on at night. However the Krumpn's Stadl bar is a lively destination frequently with live music. The most popular hotel bars are the Josl, Jenewein and Edelweiss und Gurgl. For a more sophisticated bar the Bajazzo is a good choice.

The star rating for the ski hire shops is an indication of the level of service; quality and variety of stock, and the space and decor of the shop. It is also a reflection on the price. A five star rated shop will offer great service and equipment but also will charge the highest price. Ski hire shops with a two star rating have less variety and older, poorer quality of stock but are cheapest.
