Large valley ski resort with access to large ski area - best suited to off-piste skiers/boarders
Chalets Engelberg, hotels Engelberg, ski holidays Engelberg
Engelberg lies only 36 kms South of Lucerne and was one of Switzerland's original mountain resorts, having been founded by Benedictine monks in 1120. Later it was a popular destination with Victorians looking for a resort where they could take in the mountain airs. Many of the hotels from this era still stand and their faded grandeur lends atmosphere to this pretty resort town.
The resort has fantastic winter and summer facilities and English is widely spoken. For a long while the resort was something of a hidden gem, and a well kept secret for mainly Swiss skiers. More recently however the resort has received a great deal of attention in the travel press, principally because of its incredible off-piste terrain. Despite this recent attention, the resort has retained its character and there is much to enjoy for all standards of skier. The resort's ski school has an excellent reputation.
The main lifts are on the edge of town and require a short bus ride. However, good skiers in particular will find this little hardship to access some of the best skiing in the Alps - the off-piste terrain from the Titlis at over 3,000 metres is legendary. Beginners have their own gentle ski area which is situated around the mid station of the gondola but more nervous intermediates may be surprised by the relatively steep runs and rugged terrain.

Resort Restaurants
Up to 50 to choose from from swiss to tex mex, Engelberg really does have it all. Schweizerhaus is the best for Swiss/French gourmet delights as well as the AlpenClub which offeres traditional foods. Our favourite is the Hess by Braunerts a gourmets delight, with a contemorary feel the sttention to detail of every dish is truely amazing. A must if staying in Engelberg.
Mountain Restaurants
The Ritz (at the gerschinialp beginner area and at the bottom of the Laub) and the Jochpass are both lovely rustic table service places making them lovely places for lunch.
Apres Ski
Chalet has a lovely terrace and a great happy hour. In the main square the Yucatan is the place to be with an even livelier happy hour!
Nightlife
Spindle Nightclub and the CC Bar are the best spots for a bit of dancing!

The star rating for the ski hire shops is an indication of the level of service; quality and variety of stock, and the space and decor of the shop. It is also a reflection on the price. A five star rated shop will offer great service and equipment but also will charge the highest price. Ski hire shops with a two star rating have less variety and older, poorer quality of stock but are cheapest.
