Resort Restaurants

Whether you're staying in a hotel or a chalet, Val d'Isere's 70 odd restaurants offer a wide variety of cuisine. The Grand Ourse, by the nursery slopes comes highly recommended for a top class meal. Another is Les Clochetons a little way down the valley (they have a free minibus pick-up and drop-off for clients). For something in the mid-range try the Taverne d'Alsace which is atmospheric and vibrant; Tufs on the snow in La Daille for good pizza and Shuss restaurant in the Grand Paradis hotel for an Austrian influenced menu. For those on a tighter budget then try Chez Nano (next to Dick's Tea Bar) and the Lodge. Chez Paolo for pizza and pasta; Corniche for French ambience and Casa Scara and Grand Cocor for good food. So if you are looking for a restaurant for the chalet staff night off, or you are staying on B&B basis at a hotel; Val d'Isere has plenty of restaurants that come highly recommended.

Mountain Restaurants

Good to know that whether you are staying in a chalet or hotel, Val d'Isere's mountain restaurants are slowly improving. There are lots of big self-service places with vast terraces at the top of the major lifts which are good value for money but pretty ordinary. Recommended exceptions to these are The Fruitiere at the top of La Daille gondola. Next door is the Folie Douce which is better for live music than quality food. If you like tartiflette then the Triffolet is a must, located half-way down the OK run to La Daille. The small and friendly Bar de L'Ouillette, at the base of the Madeleine chair does good food at reasonable prices. The Datcha at the bottom of the Cugnai lift is known for good but pricey salads. A new little rustic gem called the Edelweiss can be found above Le Fournet. It's worth pre-booking a table here. There is a good choice of lower altitude restaurants where skiers and non skiers can eat together and there would be no need for the skiers to go all the way back down to the chalets or hotels: Val d'Isere's Brussel's hotel terrace buffet, Tufs in La Daille, and Arolay in Le Fournet are all great lunch spots.

Apres Ski

You can find a lively apres ski scene in Val d'Isere. It kicks off at the Folie Douce at the top of la Daille gondola. This is as near as you can find to an Austrian tea time rave outside Austria with lots of loud music and dancing. Luckily for those who've had one to many you can ride the gondola down. Bananas at the foot of the slopes and it's infamous green Kamikazi drink is popular for the ski hard, play hard young. The Moris pub fills up as the lifts shut. For those who want something a little more sedate then try the Samovar hotel in La Daille or Cafe Face in town. For something with a little local flair try Boubou, Bar Jacques and Pedrix Blanche.

Nightlife

Nightlife in Val d'Isere for the Brits is all about the famous Dicks Tea Bar. The Petit Danois is a good alternative with excellent lively music and pitchers of Red Erik. Cafe Fats puts on evenings with live music. The new club called Le Graal is predominantly a French hang out. For a quieter evening away from your chalet, Val d'Isere's Lodge is cosy and there are a variety of other sophisticated hotel bars, piano bars and cocktail lounges. Hot off the press, there is a new night club called DouDoune which is just by the Rond Point des Piste area of Val. Chic, hip and cool which will certainly offer some competition to god old Dick's!

The star rating for the ski hire shops is an indication of the level of service; quality and variety of stock, and the space and decor of the shop. It is also a reflection on the price. A five star rated shop will offer great service and equipment but also will charge the highest price. Ski hire shops with a two star rating have less variety and older, poorer quality of stock but are cheapest.
