Meribel is situated in the centre of the biggest linked piste network in the world, ideal for intermediates who love covering the miles. Made up of many a ski chalet, Meribel village is purpose built but with a pleasing chalet-style architecture. There are great ski schools, lots of apres ski options and further activities to do off the slopes and away from your ski chalet. Meribel is very difficult to beat as resorts go with around 200 lifts which are generally queue free and over 600kms of piste.

An Englishman, Peter Lindsay, came across Meribel in 1938 and returned in 1946 with architect Christian Durupt. Strict guidelines were set for Meribel to retain all its Savoyarde style and as a result, all the buildings and ski chalets Meribel has today are still built with the traditional local stone, slate and wood (and none of the concrete blocks you get in some purpose built resorts). This makes the ski chalets Meribel has to offer the prettiest of the 3 valley resorts with the tree-lined runs and the afternoon sun on the Burgin side of the valley you can't beat it. The links over to both the Courchevel and Val Thorens valleys are very good and makes skiing anywhere in the 3 valleys, particularly for higher skiing at the end of the season, very accessible.

Resort Restaurants

If you would rather not spend every night eating in your ski chalets, Meribel has a wide choice for eating out from Pizzerias to the hotel restaurants. Some of the best hotel restaurants include the Grand Coeur, Allodis and Kouisena (in the Eterlou hotel). Up at altitude 1600 Chez Kiki and Les Enfants Terribles both have fantastic reputations. La Taverne restaurant downstairs has a diverse menu. Le Refuge and Flambee offer local specialities as well as pizzas and steaks. The Tsaretta in Les Allues is very popular with the locals and provides a free taxi service back to the ski chalets in Meribel after your meal. Scotts, La Taverne and Jacks Bar all do bar snacks (burgers etc).

Mountain Restaurants

Le Rond Point just above the resort is not only a great apres ski venue but also serves excellent a la carte meals at lunchtime, or cheaper paninis for those who just like a quick lunch stop. The Chardonnet, at the mid-station of the Mottaret-Saulire gondola, has excellent food but is expensive. The Cretes below the top of the Tougnette gondola provides good food and service. At the top of the Altiport run the Rhododendrons restaurant has a large sun terrace and remains popular. It also gives a lovely view over the ski chalets. Meribel resort has the Castors behind the Tougnette bubble has a good menu of local dishes and is a bit more reasonable with regards price.

Apres Ski

Jack's Bar, Scotts (a bit quieter), and Barometer are just few of the bars in town that are popular after skiing and before returning to your ski chalet. Meribel also has a great apres ski bar, Le Rond Point, just above the resort, with a large outdoor terrace. Live bands play there most evenings and it usually gets pretty busy from 5pm onwards with people enjoying the toffee vodka and dancing in their ski boots. The atmosphere matches any apres-ski found in Austria.

Nightlife

If you enjoy the nightlife more than quiet nights in your ski chalet, Meribel is definitely a great choice. Most of the bars are around the main town centre so easy to go from one to another. Le Pub is one of the busiest bars with live bands most evenings. Barometer is a great bar to try the local Mutzig beer (recommended to drink by the demi!). Scotts is a bit quieter although there are sometimes themed nights there. La Taverne bar above the restaurant has a more local atmosphere. Jack's Bar has some good promotional nights (gambling with the bar man for your drinks). Evolution and La Poste offer a bit more of a sophisticated venue to drink in. For nightclubs the famous Dick's Tea bar is open late and a very popular place with the British (a short walk from the main centre and not far from most ski chalets). Meribel's Le Loft, by the Olympic centre, would be a better choice of nightclub for you if you are looking for local French style and clientele.

The star rating for the ski hire shops is an indication of the level of service; quality and variety of stock, and the space and decor of the shop. It is also a reflection on the price. A five star rated shop will offer great service and equipment but also will charge the highest price. Ski hire shops with a two star rating have less variety and older, poorer quality of stock but are cheapest.
