Chalets Courchevel 1850, hotels Courchevel 1850, ski holidays Courchevel 1850

Courchevel 1850 is quite deservedly a world-class resort - it has slopes to suit all standard of skier which are accessed by a very impressive lift system. With gentle runs leading down into the resort centre it is possible to ski back to many hotels and chalets. Courchevel has the most extensive and varied ski area of the whole Trois Vallees with everything from long gentle greens to steep couloirs. There are some great world class restaurants in Courchevel 1850. Chalets and hotels also give access to excellent shopping and very good apres ski by French standards. Snow reliability is superb all season as most of the valley faces North and the ski schools, of which there are several, are very good as is the popular Village des Enfants situated in the centre of the resort. The number of chalet beds is very limited compared to demand and there are only a few affordable hotels. Courchevel 1850 fans are recommended to book early if looking for the better value options.

Pros

  • Extensive and varied local terrain to suit everyone plus the rest of the Three Valleys
  • Lots of ski-in / ski-out hotels and Courchevel 1850 chalets
  • Impressive lift system, piste maintenance and snowmaking
  • A magnificent wide green run into resort
  • Great mountain restaurants, resort restaurants and exclusive apres-ski and nightlife

Cons

  • Some pistes get crowded in high season
  • Not the most attractive resort
  • Some of the priciest hotel, bars and restaurants and it's just getting more expensive
  • It's losing some of its French feel as the British and Russians invade

Resort Restaurants

Courchevel has a fine selection of good and expensive French restaurants in town. The 2* Michelin restaurant of the Chabichou (Bateau Ivre) speaks for itself. Great Savoyard food can be found at the cosy Saulire and the Fromagerie. The Chapelle, Via Ferrata and the Cloche are also worth trying. The Tremplin is the king of delicious crepes. The Locomotive is full of character. The Hotel Tovets offers good food at reasonable prices. The Grand Cafe under Hotel St Joseph is good for Asian cuisine. The Tex Mex Kalico isn't shy about the portion sizes. Herewith is a list of the Michelin starred restaurants in Courchevel 1850: Le 1947 (2 stars) at Hotel Cheval Blanc; Hotel Les Airelles (2 stars); Hotel Le Chabichou (2 stars); Le Bateau Ivre (one star) at the Hotel Pomme de Pin and the Hotel Kilimandjaro (one star).

Mountain Restaurants

The mountain restaurants above Courchevel 1850 rival any resort but beware they can be rather pricey. Many of the table service restaurants require reservations. Cap Horn (near the airstrip) is believed to be the most expensive in the area with a phenominally expensive wine list. Chalet De Pierres on the Verdons pistes is close behind but a great spot for skiers and pedestrians alike to meet for fine dining. The Bergerie seems to capture the imaginations of the fashionable crowd. La Soucoupe on Verdons has good food and views with self-service downstairs and table service upstairs where food is cooked on a log fire. The Panoramic at the top of Saulire also has both self-service and table service. Bel Air above 1650 is good value, good fun and has good food although still needs pre-booking. However, don't be too alarmed there are a good selection of fairly good value self-service restaurants with good atmospheres conveniently located.

Apres Ski

As the lifts close Bar Jump is the place to be at the foot of slopes however it does get rather packed. S'no Limit next door is a good alternative. The new Milk Pub set underground with live music is also worth trying. Saulire and Potiniere are also popular.

Nightlife

If you want lots of nightlife then you won't be disappointed but don't forget your credit card! The Caves with Paris cabaret acts and sky high prices is the cream of the crop. The Bergerie has themed evenings and is pricey. Piggys is the world's only medieval themed French/ Irish wine bar/ pub/ disco. Mangeoire has an excellent piano bar. However, Kalico is popular amongst the lesser furcoated crowd and offers DJs and cocktails until the early hours.

The star rating for the ski hire shops is an indication of the level of service; quality and variety of stock, and the space and decor of the shop. It is also a reflection on the price. A five star rated shop will offer great service and equipment but also will charge the highest price. Ski hire shops with a two star rating have less variety and older, poorer quality of stock but are cheapest.
